Step aside Batman V Superman, Iron Man V Captain America is here. That's right, Robert Downey Jr. is on the verge of signing on to be a part of Captain America 3. The first movie of Phase 3 will apparently be going all out, kicking off the Civil War saga in Marvel's Cinematic Universe.
Variety and Badass Digest broke the news exclusively, stating that though it had been rumoured that Downey was in talks to star in another Iron Man movie, the negotiations were actually taking place for Captain America 3. The movie is tentatively titled, Civil War or Fallen Son, and will see Chris Evans' Captain America, face off against Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. DC must be doubly glad now, that they changed the release date of Batman V Superman!
Downey's role is said to be co-starring, as opposed to just a cameo, and will apparently require 30-40 days of shooting from him. The movie will also reportedly feature Cap's new Avengers team, consisting of War Machine, Falcon, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow and The Vision. For those unfamiliar with the storyline, it involves a Superheroes Registration Act, which requires all superheroes to register with the Government, and act as police. While Stark is for the act, Rogers doesn't believe in it, and sees it as a violation of privacy, well in line with his views shown in this year's The Winter Soldier.

If Marvel adapts a similar storyline, the movie would probably feature Robert Downey Jr. as a villain of sorts, which would certainly be an interesting turn of events for MCU's original superhero.
Other than Captain America 3, it's also rumoured that the Russo brothers will take on the directing duties from Joss Whedon, and continue the storyline in Avengers 3, and possibly even 4. Moreover, it's also mentioned that Cap won't be a part of Avengers 3. Could it be that Steve Rogers dies? With the title Fallen Son being tossed around, it's certainly a possibility. However, it's more likely that he just disappears/retires for a while and joins back in Avengers 4, since Chris Evans will still have one movie left in his contract.
All this probably means Thanos is still further than most hoped, and might still take more than a couple Avengers flicks to reach Earth and face off against its mightiest heroes. The future of MCU still looks bright as ever, and with more heroes set to join the Universe sooner rather than later, it can only mean good things.
