After what seems like the biggest casting search in recent history, Marvel has finally its Doctor Strange in Benedict Cumberbatch.
Deadline is reporting that the Sherlock star, who will be seen in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and The Imitation Game this year, is currently in final talks for portraying Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme on the big screen.
Almost every big name star was rumoured to play the character, and Joaquin Pheonix, was reportedly in final talks for the character as well. However, the deal apparently fell through due to him not agreeing to commit to a multi-movie contract.
Interestingly, if Cumberbatch ends up as Doctor Strange, then that would put both the Sherlocks, Cumberbatch and Downey Jr. in the same universe, and might even lead to them sharing some screen space down the line in Avengers 3. Now that would be a sight to behold. Though, hopefully it wouldn't effect Sherlock's already painstakingly slow schedule.
Doctor Strange will be directed by, Scott Derrickson (Sinister), and the script is currently being rewritten by screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).
